Did you know that October is one of the quietest — and prettiest — months to be on Schweitzer Mountain? The National Weather Service has Sandpoint sunny and 72 degrees today, with a mostly clear night dipping to 44. Up on the mountain it's cooler, of course: sunny and 59 at Schweitzer today, with a 42-degree overnight low. Thursday looks much the same — partly sunny and 72 in town, mostly sunny and 58 up top — before a front rolls through on Friday with a chance of rain showers. And here's a fun one to watch: Friday night, the forecast hints at rain and snow showers up on the slopes, with temperatures sliding to 36 degrees. No lift-turning snow yet, but the season is stirring.

The resort itself is officially in its fall pause — summer operations have closed for the season, and the ski season is still about seven weeks out, with the winter 2026–27 season tentatively slated to begin November 27. But "quiet" at Schweitzer doesn't mean nothing is happening. The mountain has rolled out a slate of new experiences for this winter, headlined by Private Night Skiing — groups can book exclusive after-hours access to Basin Express terrain. There's also a "Learn to Ski in 3" package for first-timers, a six-week Women's Wednesdays instructional program, a Crow's Bench Cellar Dinner, and a mountaintop elopement package. Meanwhile, the resort's Chairs for Charity program raised more than $146,000 for Sandpoint-area nonprofits, and the spa, lodging, and dining stay open year-round.

For today's local business spotlight, we're looking at Sandpoint's next generation of makers. The new career technical center at Sandpoint High School is taking shape, with carpentry students working in an industry-standard shop, an automotive bay with lifts and state-of-the-art equipment, and a culinary arts classroom complete with a faux restaurant so students can learn everything from running a restaurant-grade dishwasher to serving a fine dining meal. The build was funded largely by the Idaho Career Ready Students Grant — and here's the part we love — local businesses stepped up as community partners: Idaho Forest Group, Litehouse, Gription Tire, the Panhandle Alliance for Education, Kiwanis, and Rotary all backed the project. Courses are even open to homeschool, private, and part-time students. A town's future, being built by its own backyard.

Looking ahead to the weekend, one event stands out: Ending Hunger, Bite-by-Bite returns to the Bonner County Fairgrounds this Saturday, October 10, from 5 to 8 in the evening. Small plates from local restaurants like 113 Main, Baxter's, Beet and Basil, and Flavor anchor the evening, with silent and live auctions, a paddle raise, and new games this year — all raising support for the Bonner Community Food Bank as it moves into a larger facility in Ponderay. Mark your calendars, too, for the inaugural Sandpoint Idaho Film Fest, October 17 through 24, bringing a week of independent film to venues across town.

If October's golden quiet has you daydreaming about your own mountain perch, The Village Overlook would love to host you. It's a cozy, hotel-style one-room condo on the hill above Schweitzer's ski village, with the crisp air, the empty trails, and the whole of Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille at your feet. Come settle in for a fall getaway — the mountain is waiting.
