Did you know the clearest sign that winter is getting close at Schweitzer is not always snow on the ground? Sometimes it is a deadline. The resort is carrying a season pass sale deadline notice on its own Mountain Report this morning, urging skiers and riders to secure a Schweitzer season pass before prices go up. With opening day set for Friday, November 27, just 42 days from today, this weekend is a smart time to lock in your winter. The strongest new offer for beginners is the Learn to Ski in 3 program, which provides three days of lift tickets, lessons, and gear for 405 dollars, and skiers and riders who complete it earn unlimited access to Schweitzer during March and April.

On the mountain itself, Schweitzer remains closed in the off-season, with no lifts or trails open and no new snow figures to report, so nobody should plan on turns this weekend. The resort page did not publish a current on-mountain weather table in the text available this morning, so the outlook here comes from the National Weather Service point forecast for Schweitzer Basin itself, high on the mountain at about 6,090 feet, and never from a town forecast for Sandpoint. That forecast calls for a mostly sunny Friday with a high near 52 and a light southwest wind of 3 to 8 miles per hour, then partly cloudy skies tonight with a low around 38. Saturday turns gustier, with a slight chance of sprinkles after 11 a.m., a high near 46, and southwest winds of 7 to 15 miles per hour gusting as high as 30, before Sunday settles back to sunny skies and a high near 44.

There is more winter shaping up behind the scenes. Schweitzer is also introducing Private Night Skiing off the Basin Express this season, paired with private dining and an apres bar, a very different way to experience the mountain after dark. Looking further ahead, work continues toward Schweitzer Creek Village, the resort's future second base area, with a new access road and roughly 1,400 parking spaces targeted for the 2027-28 season. This winter will also be a farewell season of sorts: President Tom Chasse has said 2026-27 will be his last season after two decades leading the resort, a tenure that saw five new lifts, the Sky House summit lodge, and a long run of mountain modernization.

Down in Sandpoint, the panhandle news this week has a beloved downtown landmark at its center. The historic Panida Theater has launched its annual fall fundraising campaign, and its board members are going first, pledging a collective 10,000 dollars to match the first 10,000 dollars donated by community members. The campaign aims to raise 25,000 dollars by October 27 for operating funds covering staffing, utilities, insurance, maintenance, and programming, separate from the theater's Century Fund for capital improvements. Next year marks the Panida's 100th birthday, which makes this fall's drive especially timely. The theater's annual membership meeting is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, at the theater on North First Avenue.

Today's events give you plenty of reasons to head into town this evening, Friday, October 16. Pend Oreille Winery hosts live music with Tucker James from 5 to 8 p.m., a one-man-band performance spanning rock, country, and pop. At The Hive on North First Avenue, the Copper Mountain Band takes the stage tonight with line dancing lessons, starting at 7 p.m., with tickets at 10 dollars in advance or 15 dollars at the door. The Music Conservatory of Sandpoint also opens its weekend celebration today and tomorrow, October 16 and 17, celebrating America's musical heritage with the 250 Express piano program and a Celebration of American Music at Little Carnegie, featuring conservatory faculty, students, and friends.

Saturday is the big day of this weekend preview. The Sandpoint Farmers' Market holds its Harvest Fest at Farmin Park, the final Saturday market of the 2026 season, running 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with local food, vendors, and fall activities. Volunteers can start the day at City Beach with the Fall Shoreline Cleanup alongside the Idaho Conservation League. Then the inaugural Sandpoint Idaho Film Fest opens Saturday and runs through October 24, beginning with a free Film Crawl at downtown venues and continuing with an afterparty at The Hive featuring Glizi with Lady Oda, plus a live comedy show with Jonathan van Halem hosted by Kaleb Keaton.

After a day like that, imagine finishing the evening back up on the hill, watching the lights come on over the village and the lake fade into dusk below. That is the simple pleasure of staying at The Village Overlook, our hotel-style studio on the hill above Schweitzer's ski village. You are close to the mountain air and the countdown to opening day, with Sandpoint's music, markets, and theater an easy drive below. Whether you are coming for a fall weekend now or planning ahead for those first chairlift rides on November 27, we would love to welcome you. Come enjoy the quiet before the snow flies, and be here when winter arrives.
