October 10, 2026. Sandpoint wakes to 41 degrees and a sky that can't quite decide, with the National Weather Service giving us a 20 percent chance of showers after 11 a.m. and a mostly sunny afternoon high near 54. The KOTX radar is showing real shower activity this morning, with echo cells over the Colville highlands to the west and near the Canadian border to the north. Tonight is the interesting part: the snow level drops to 2,400 feet after midnight while temperatures fall to around 33, so the first dusting of white on Schweitzer's 6,400-foot summit is very much in play. Sunday turns partly sunny and breezy with a high near 50, and Columbus Day looks sunny at 55.
Schweitzer Mountain Resort is still in its quiet shoulder season, with no lifts turning and no snow report yet, but the countdown is official: the resort's target opening day for the 2026-27 season is November 27, confirmed in this fall's Ikon Pass opening-date announcement. Winter is also bringing a bigger lineup of experiences for 2026-27, including a Learn to Ski in 3 package for first-timers, a six-week Women's Wednesdays instructional program, a six-course Crow's Bench Cellar Dinner with wine pairings, and the new after-hours private night skiing program. It is the kind of news that makes a 48-day countdown feel real.
Saturday's real show, though, is down by the water. Right now the kokanee salmon are turning bright red in Trestle Creek, the clear little tributary just off Highway 200 on the east side of Lake Pend Oreille. The run is visible from late September into early October, so this weekend may be your best and last easy chance of the season to stand on the bank and watch the stream run alive with color. The creek is closed to fishing to protect the spawning beds, which makes it pure wildlife watching: quiet, free, and spectacular. And if you are willing to drive the hour up to Bonners Ferry, the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge is deep into fall migration season. The 2,774-acre refuge is free to visit, and October brings thousands of ducks and geese dropping in from the north, moose wading the ponds, and bald eagles cutting across open sky.
Town is humming, too. Apple Fest takes over downtown Sandpoint today from 11 to 4, with the apple pie contest, an apple slingshot, games, and discounts from local shops. Matchwood Brewing pours its fourth annual Oktoberfest from noon to 6 this afternoon, with German-inspired food, five regional breweries, live music, and proceeds benefiting the Bonner Community Food Center. The Sandpoint Farmers Market runs 9 to 1 at Farmin Park, and Teascarlet South opens its doors with a grand opening celebration starting at 1.
If a weekend like this sounds like your kind of October, consider this your invitation. The Village Overlook sits high on the hill above Schweitzer's ski village, and fall might be the prettiest time to be here: migrating waterfowl on the refuge, salmon red in the creeks, and the first summit flakes on the way. Come spend a Saturday in Sandpoint and wake up to the mountain.
